Google: Secret Android Lockdown
Stock Invader Internet Rant | Secret Intel | Google Becoming Worse by the Minute
Google is Making Some Changes…
I usually avoid covering mega-caps, but we need to talk about Google. While still dominating in AI and other technologies, Google is quietly launching initiatives that could dismantle today’s MOATs to secure the future.
We’re all familiar with Google as this super digital conglomerate actively pushing technology into the future but what if their real value lies in the nature of their systems?
The Age of Smartphone Supremacy
Before the iPhone there were plenty of phones to choose from, there still are however the world settled on two main operating systems: iOS(Apple) and Android(Google).
iOS dominates the West and Android the East. The real difference being that Android was open-source. You could build on it, modify it and customize software without asking Google for permission.
This is now changing.
Why Are They Doing This?
They aren’t turning Android into closed source just yet. But starting this September, developers must now have a verified digital ID to run software on top of Android devices.
This trend isn’t unique to Google as many platforms now seem to require age verification. But for Google this mostly hurts developers, nerds and the overall platform.
Their “reason” is to limit the ever increasing malware that has been surging from bad actors/developers. But this is no longer just about the Play Store, but the entire device itself.
Why This Might Be Bad for Google?
While Android remains ‘open-source’ the nature of these new requirements makes it as if you bought a car and can’t change anything significant beneath the hood.
The real question becomes: Why even bother with an Android device at all?
Sure, the Google ecosystem is very sticky. But I can easily access it from my iPhone… In my opinion if they weren’t threatened, they wouldn’t be doing this at all.
AI Demands OS Domination
While I cant prove it… This is a move to protect a global monopoly. Google has always excelled at software, which is ironically the first thing AI stands to disrupt.
So while Android is still everywhere… Software is becoming more competitve and to maintain the lead? You have to protect what users see first. Whoever controls OS distribution also controls which AI models reaches the masses. Owning the front-screen is a must.
But Google barely controls the hardware-layer. Their Pixel phone has failed to meaningfully take-off making their OS dependant on parterships. Mainly through Samsung which is opening their doors for ChatGPT and Perplexity for the sake of their own independence.
Funnily enough, Apple who neglected software almost entirely except for the main interface has achieved the ultimate upper-hand here. Pivoting aggressively into hardware and winning despite the lack of innovation…
Preparing for AGI?
I just don’t think this is purely about malware… But instead a deeper plot where Google is bracing for a world where AGI-level intelligence lives on a device. And they intend to own both the distribution layer and the AI model that reaches everything.
If that’s the case then it makes sense why they:
